"About Us" |
J. Suttle
Swanage Quarries is situated approximately 1 mile South
of the town of Swanage, Dorset, England. The site itself
is known as "California Quarry" and lies on the
edge of the world heritage site "The Jurassic
Coast". Stone has been quarried at this location for hundreds of years, and the town was built on its quarrying industry. Quarrying has shaped the land, and made it what it is today. The views from the quarry are breathtaking, with Peverel Point, Durlston Castle, The Globe, Dancing Ledge, Worbarrow Bay, Tyneham Village, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and Corfe Castle all close by. Most people who visit the Quarry surprisingly ask "and where is the actual Quarry" as it has a very low impact in the surrounding area, and it is not visible unless you are right on top of it. |
The Suttle family has been working in the Purbeck stone industry since the 1920's. Previously the family had been engaged in quarrying in Co Durham, working with "Frosterly Marble" amongst other stones. In the early 1960's John Suttle started quarrying at "Mutton Hole" quarry, Swanage, moving South to a piece of land known as Swanage Quarry in 1967. |
Upon his
fathers death in 1975, Chris Suttle took over the
business and commenced trading as "J. Suttle Swanage
Quarries". The business grew and grew and in 2000
the works at Swanage Quarry were relocated to the
"California Quarry" where it remains today. The company is able to cut, polish, work and produce Purbeck stone on the premises, for building, landscaping, and flooring, to both trade and retail customers. J Suttle Swanage Quarries are
pleased to have supplied Purbeck Stone to the following
